What’s in a name?
Well, for us, naming our little slice of paradise became a sporting event. It’s important to convey a sense of place, a sense of self, and a sense of humor. Our family would sit around and throw out ideas…
Bogalicious
Bog Fusion
Bog Bliss
Blissful Bog
Boggy Bottom Boys
Eagles Nest (really?)
You name it, we’ve thought of it. But, when Bear-Bottomed Bog came out of my sister’s mouth, we all looked at each other and burst out laughing. Our land is on a bog, the bog is at the bottom of the hill, the woods around us have bears…and it’s a double entendre. What’s not to love?
This whole “land in the Northwoods” idea came about after my sister and her husband bought a lake home in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Vacationing in the Northwoods together had been a long-standing tradition, but when they bought a house, it wasn’t just vacationing any longer.
My sister and I have always been close. In a city of millions, we’ve lived within 15 minutes of each other for the last 25 years. So, when my husband and I were driving to the airport after a nice, relaxing trip to their WI home, my husband said, “we better start looking for land up here. There is no way you and your sister can live apart from one another.”
And so it began. In 2005 we bought six acres of forest land at the top of a bog. We’ve spent the last 12 years walking the land and envisioning the house we would build, where it would sit on the site, the angles of the sunrise and sunset, the placement of the garden, and how the driveway would angle in from the road.
Here we are, 2017. We are in the midst of construction, we know exactly how our view is going to look, my husband and I are planning our glass business, and we have the perfect name for our home.
Oh…and my sister and I will be spending our golden years driving our husbands crazy with our raucous laughter, cooking, shopping, eating and drinking…together…thanks to my selfless husband who knows me too well.
Yay, can hardly wait!! ❤️🐻
